Last Saturday we had a wonderful Russian lesson taught by Tanya and here is why.
All activities were age appropriate, interesting and just long enough. The lesson consisted of a variety of learning activities, strategically spread out throughout with the last activity (book reading) summarizing everything that was taught that day (prepositions, shapes, colors, vowels). The timing was excellent. As soon as the kids grew unfocused with one activity, Tanya was quick to suggest another.
- Tanya started with a bit of fun exercising, where kids used their hands to show animal figures. She also took suggestions from the little ones who were so excited to make animals that they came up with a few ideas on their own.
- Then the kids followed the story about Mr. Tongue who lives in a house (a mouth) and loved doing tongue twisting. This laid a nice foundation for repeating vowels.
- Next Tanya worked with “tricky” pictures, where an image of an animal was hidden in the sophisticated pattern of colors and shapes. The kids were asked to recognize each animal.
- The little tykes played!!! But as they played they learned about prepositions, such as on, between, before, after, etc. Tanya brought a variety of toys and asked the kids to explain where these were located by using prepositions.
- Tanya then covered all toys with a blanket and took away one of them. The kids were asked to point out what was taken away (Yes, they absolutely loved this game!) . This was followed by a story on the importance of sharing.
- We finished up with a story about Masha and three bears and we counted things pictured in the book, defined their location and named colors, as we read along.
Next Saturday Sveta and Serhej will introduce the concept of time, so please join us or follow this blog.
