I have a plan for the Russian Readings gathering today. I think it is a pretty good one, although I have my reservations about the kids being tired and less focused at the end of the day. I will try it out anyways and see how it goes.
First, a new horovod… I feel we have been stuck with the same horovoding ideas for a while now. The children seem to like saying short verses and making body movements. This time I will try to introduce a longer verse and though it was not meant to be recited with gestures, I think I will add a few.

«Солнышко»
Мама! Мама!
Посмотри! (making a cape with hands)
Ручеек бежит,
Струится! (imitating a snake movement with hands)
Словно там
в воде, внутри,
ярко звездочка
искрится! (looking into the water depth, as if surprised to see a star)
А под тем резным
листом
прячется
наверно, гном! (pretending to look under the leaves)
Посмотри,
Он весь одет
В темный сморщенный
вельвет! (making big eyes)
- Кто же этот
старичок?
- Это, дочка,
гриб сморчок (making a mushroom with both hands)
This will give us a chance to talk about letters. What letter does the word “гриб” start with? What letter does “гном” begin with? Do you know how to spell this letter? I will write a wrong letter on the magnet board and claim it is “г”. Will the kids catch me, I wonder?
Next, I will ask them to write “A”. I will demonstrate a picture that contains several objects that start with letter “A”. Each kids will receive a copy of the picture to find and circle the objects starting with A.
I will tell them they are doing a good job. Not all people can write letters so well. Foe example, I know a story of a boy who did not learn to write letters, and one day his dad sent him to school and… They will find out what happened to the boy by listening to Tolstoy’s “Buratino”.
Yes, I know we read this one once, but my little one LOVES it and I overheard Alina and Danik asking their parents a few times if we would read KARABAS BARABAS. Apparently, the book made quite an impression on young minds, so why no re-read it. Especially since this book belongs to the best Russian children’s literature.
Once we get to the place, where Buratino sold his azbuka to buy tickets to the performance, I will ask if the kids would do that to their books? Would they listen to their parents and go to school or would they act like disobedient Buratino?
Since they are all, I am sure, good and special kids, they will choose school over performance, although watching a performance is a good idea once the chool work is done. This will be a good time to introduce a proverb “Сделал дело-гуляй смело.”
So, we will do ”дело” first, before continuing reading. The kids will be given three pics with three letter and objects that start with those letters. They will be asked to circle the right objects .
We will finish up with the second part of the “Buratino” story. So what do you think about this?
