Dinosaurs are coming!!!

The next lesson to be taught by Lesya and Kevin will be dedicated to dinosaurs and the concept of past.

The objectives are to extend the Russian vocabulary by using the nouns “past”, “present”, “dinosaurs”, “habitat” and the nouns describing body parts as well as the verbs denoting bodily movements, like dinosaurs rushing, etc. Additionally, we will teach the idea of animals adapting to their natural habitats.

We plan to introduce different kinds of dinosaurs by showing plastic dinosaurs toys (they cost about $1 each at Walmart – sweet deal!!!) and discuss that they used to live long ago. The dinosaurs differed in shapes and looks, some had long necks, others- sharp teeth, yet others had their bodies covered with armory. This will help the kids to realize that dinosaurs, just like modern animals, had to adjust to their habitats and thus adapted functions that helped them to survive.
We will read the word “dinosaurs” in Russian and see very short excerpts from the dinosaur movies to glean insights into how the world used to be in the past. We will also do simple math by adding and subtracting dinosaurs.

Our final activity will be meant for the kids to work together with their parents. Each child will receive a picture of the dinosaur that is cut into pieces. The assignment is to glue the picture together, read the basic facts about the dinosaur they see in it and present it to the rest of the group. Since each child will have a unique picture, we are hopeful the audience will be interested as little speakers do the talking.

Ideas to improve this lesson are welcome!

Thanks, Nataly!

I think the lesson was not bad overall. Only I forgot to do a math activity and count dinosaurs. Also, we wanted to cut the dinosaur pics into puzzle pieces, but were afraid the kids could not handle both assignments, putting together a puzzle and presenting their pic. Looking back I realize, they could have probably done that just fine!

Hi, Lesya! Congratulations! Great work you have made for your last class! Where did you find this information? May I use it for my school lesson?
Greetings to everybody!

Yes, please feel free using these ideas and modifying them as you please. Kevin was the one in charge of collecting dinosaur info. His two favorite resources are www.dinosaurcentral.com and http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/prehistoric_life/games/dinosaur_world/ .

Also, if it helps here is how we went about the lesson.

Firstly, we asked the kids to read the word "dinosaur". Then we asked them what they thought the lesson would be about? Did they ever see dinosaurs? Where? Were they real breathing creatures?

Then we explained the reason why the kids never saw dinosaurs in real life was because these creatures had lived long ago and they became extinct ever since..

To explain "long ago", we looked at the two maps on the second slide. We connected the explanation to the previous lesson on geography, where we learned about the map and the way the Earth looks on the map. So the kids recognized the modern map. Then, we said, long ago the earth looked differently and pointed to the other map. We discussed how different it was.

В то время современные материки были сдвинуты и образовывали единое целое. Климат был жарким и сухим, и поэтому обширные участки суши напоминали пустыню. На влажных низменностях в долинах рек и по побережьям океанов росли папоротники и хвощи, а в лесах - древовидные папоротники, хвойные и гинкговые деревья. В юрском и меловом периодах динозавры были очень многочисленны и разнообразны. Около 65 миллионов лет назад, в конце мелового периода, динозавры вымерли.

Of course, I have simplified my language throughout the lesson, but that was the basic info I gave.

Next, we talked about a huge variety of dinosaurs. Самым явным отличием динозавров от других рептилий является расположение их конечностей. Они находятся прямо под туловищем динозавра, примерно так же, как у млекопитающих. Динозавры - это сухопутные животные.Они могли быть величиной с кошку или курицу, а могли достигать размеров огромных китов. Одни из них передвигались на четырех конечностях, другие же бегали на задних ногах. Были среди них ловкие охотники и кровожадные хищники, но были и безобидные растительноядные животные.

All armoured dinosaurs were plant eaters. Some of them had spikes at the end of their tail, or a big club, to defend themselves. The plated dinosaurs were vulnerable on their neck, and the armoured ones' weak spot was their soft underbelly.

Lastly, we watched dinosaur video clips and did a dinosaur puzzle. We finished up with each kido presenting her dinosaur to the rest off the group.

I am glad you are stopping by our blog. I check out yours regularly and you are doing a great job! Stay in touch!
